As a public school teacher, partisan bickering in education that focuses on competing ideas rather than producing results for our children has frustrated me. George W. Bush has risen above this roadblock, working with both Republicans and Democrats to help produce remarkable gains and reforms in Texas. Texas students have made the greatest gains nationally in overall student achievement. In particular, its minority children have risen from among the lowest ranks to now lead the nation in writing and math. Bush strongly emphasizes early childhood literacy programs and supports Head Start programs for low-income families. He also signed teacher pay raises, increased funding for the classroom and has promoted charter schools.
