Reading the review of “The Twilight of American Culture” (Books, Sept. 3), I now realize one of my callings–to be a “new monastic individual” and preserve some of the good of our civilization during the current decline.
And I thought I was just raising my children as I was raised–with a strong faith in God, a sense of right and wrong and duty, protected from immoral and dangerous influences, and with a generally positive view of an admittedly imperfect humanity.
As any Christian is called, to “be in the world, but not of it.”
