Amid the numerous letters applauding the Tribune’s outstanding report investigating nursing errors and patient safety was one Sept. 14 by an RN whose hospital has been subjected to staff cutbacks and critical shortages. He pleads not to leave your loved ones alone in a hospital. “It just isn’t safe.”

But how can we–average laymen with no medical background or knowledge–serve as patients’ advocates? How would we know if our dear ones were getting the proper dosage or even the proper medication?
