THE LAST CAMPAIGN: How Harry Truman Won the 1948 Election

By Zachary Karabell

Knopf, 308 pages, $27.50

The winner of this year’s Heartland Prize for nonfiction, “The Last Campaign” is a fascinating account of the 1948 election that is full of suspense–even though the reader knows how it will turn out. In our stage-managed age, it’s important to remember that campaigns can be exciting. Zachary Karabell’s story is well-told and offers great insight. The parallels to the 2000 presidential race–particularly the battle for the heartland vote–are almost eerie.
