Jacova Miller, on Sept. 24, 2000, at home in New Milford, CT. Jacova, known as Covie, was a native of Chicago. She was a graduate of Oberlin College and of the School of Social Service Administration of the University of Chicago. For a number of years she served as a psychiatric social worker on the staff of the Scholarship and Guidance Association, she served in the same capacity in the Pediatric Department of Psychiatry of the University of Chicago Clinics and in the Psychiatry Department of Herrick Hospital, now affiliated with Alta Bates Summit Medical Center of Berkeley, CA. Thereafter she was in private practice in Los Angeles and Berkeley, CA. Covie was interested in politics throughout her life stemming from her active involvement in the presidential campaign of Adlai Stevenson. Following her remarriage, Covie lived in London, England and New Milford, CT, where she became actively involved with community events and issues. In New Milford she produced and directed a film for public television advancing a local youth leadership program and was elected as a member of the New Milford Democratic Town Committee. In London, she indulged her passion for gardening, redesigning the garden of her home there and becoming a member of the Royal Horticultural Society. Covie’s avocation was singing. She spent a week each year at a Camp Harmony in Santa Cruz, CA, sang in choruses in California and in England and sang folk music at the Cecil Sharpe House in London, England. She was also a keen hiker and at age 57 completed the 52 mile Yosemite High Sierra Loop. She is survived by her husband, Norman Miller, of New Milford, CT; her daughter, Katherine Silverthorne, of Washington, DC; her stepdaughter, Barbara Silverthorne; and granddaughter, Rebecca Benack of Santa Cruz, CA; her sister, Karen O’Neil of Charlottesville, VA and by her parents, Miriam and Alex Elson of Chicago.
