Angela Kurnick, 86, who fed and found homes for dozens of stray cats and was known in her Brighton Park neighborhood as “Grandma Kitty,” died of cancer Monday, Oct. 2, in her sister’s home in Berwyn. Mrs. Kurnick’s affection for cats was so strong that she and her husband kept their garage and heated back porch open to strays and any other cat that was hungry or curious enough to wander in. “She didn’t talk a whole lot to the neighbors, but when it came time and she knew the cats needed a home, she would go out and start asking around,” said her daughter, Corinne Bosak. Mrs. Kurnick was raised in the Douglas Park neighborhood. In 1954, she married Casimir Kurnick, who shared her affection for animals. He died in 1987. After her husband’s death, Mrs. Kurnick’s devotion to cats increased, Bosak said. Mrs. Kurnick is also survived by a son, Reginald Maytan; a sister, Dolores Ziarko; and five grandchildren. Services will be at 9:45 a.m. Friday in Foran Funeral Home, 7300 Archer Ave., Summit. Mass will be said at 10:30 a.m. Friday in St. Leonard Catholic Church, 3318 S. Clarence Ave., Berwyn.
