The Tribune position is to remove Chief Illiniwek as a symbol. It suggested the University of Illinois and its supporters are petty and shortsighted in their approach to the issue.
The university understands the sensitive nature of the issue to large numbers of its alumni over the years. It is taking a cautious and prudent approach to resolution.
Perhaps the Tribune could learn from the U. of I. before throwing its considerable editorial weight behind such an issue. At best the Tribune is antagonizing a large audience of people. At worst it risks a loss of newspaper circulation, which will certainly be the case with me.
The Tribune would do well to publish others’ opinions on this issue and leave editorial comment for more important issues.
