The following are volunteer opportunities in the western suburbs:

– American Cancer Society, 11 E. Wilson St., Batavia, needs volunteers for office work such as filing, stuffing envelopes and photocopying. Minimum age is 14. 630-879-9009.

– Adopt Animals Deserving of Proper Treatment, P.O. Box 4131, Naperville, needs volunteers to do fundraising, work at special events, transport pets and provide temporary care for dogs or cats in their homes. 630-355-2299.

– Big Brothers Big Sisters, 222 E. Willow Ave., Wheaton, an organization that matches children ages 7 to 14 with caring and positive adult role models, needs volunteers to act for one year as a big brother or big sister and to see children at least three times a month for two to six hours. – Central DuPage Hospital, 25 N. Winfield Rd., Winfield, A 375-bed hospital. needs volunteers to work in the gift or coffee shop, to transport patients and to resupply stations in emergency rooms. Also, needs volunteers need to assist in the Wise Penny Resale Shop, 120 N. Main St., Wheaton. Minimum age is 14 and must be in high school. 630-933-6207.

– Centro Hispano, 204 Turner Ct., West Chicago, a non-profit agency that provides a range of social services, such as assistance in finding housing, referrals for health care and food pantries, needs volunteers to answer phones, to do office work and to write grant proposals. 630-876-8113.

– DuPage Bar Legal Aid Service, 126 S. County Farm Rd., Wheaton. Provides free legal assistance to the indigent, primarily in the area of family law, needs attorneys or law students to do legal research, make phone calls to clients and assist with managing files. – DuPage County Solid Waste Education Center, 550 Center Ave., Carol Stream, needs volunteers to organize and pack books donated by schools and libraries. The books are then donated to schools locally and worldwide. High school age or older. 630-681-2400.

– Family Counseling Service of Aurora, 70 S. River St., Aurora, is a non-profit community agency that provides professional services to families and individuals as they struggle to achieve self-sufficiency, needs volunteers for the Friends in Neighborhoods program, that matches older adults with volunteers who visit them and provide friendly conversation and companionship.
