After reading Sunday’s sports section, my football enthusiasm has taken a big hit.
First I learned of the Hubbard High School coaches’ reaction to losing a close football game. Maybe the officiating was poor, but it happens all the time–witness the previous week’s Illinois-Michigan game. Coaches know it and should be adult enough to deal with it.
Next I read of the 49ers’ Terrell Owens taunting the Dallas Cowboys twice; after a fine and a week’s suspension he said he was “only being . . . who I am.” Though I am no Cowboys fan, ignorant behavior is ignorant behavior no matter who exhibits it. “Who I am” is an idiot.
Lastly, I read “Other Views” regarding the Bears’ dismal performance. It is certainly disappointing to watch them lose, but the name-calling and vitriol in the letters was even more disappointing.
It’s a game. Players, coaches and fans should try to remember that.
