Never mind the naysayers who claim there’s no difference between the two presidential candidates. The first debate clearly demonstrated the stark choice Americans face. On the one hand, Gov. George W. Bush flubbed and fumbled his way through pre-scripted boilerplate. He’s cleverly cultivated the art of faking sincerity, it’s true, but he utterly lacks even the most basic knowledge of his own plans, much less his opponent’s ideas or fundamental geo-political realities.
Vice President Al Gore, on the other hand, showed a mastery of both domestic and foreign policy issues, abundant leadership qualities and concern for the less well-off. Gore kept the debate focused on what’s important: policy, not personality; presidential stature, not “fuzzy” evasions.
