Although Tuesday’s presidential debate was essentially a tie, Al Gore dominated the debate by virtue of talking over everyone, particularly moderator Jim Lehrer. As for George W. Bush, although initially tentative, he did well. I thought that Bush’s finest point was that he would not be ruled by polls but by principle.
Bush could have added that politicians rule by polls and statesmen rule by principle. This is the defining issue between the two. Gore is, will be, can only be a poll-driven politician. There is every expectation that Bush, by his philosophy and performance as governor, can and will be a statesman. America and the world badly need a statesman.
