There is a sad shortage in American politics today of role models to inspire talented young men and women to seek elective office. Sidney Yates was such a role model for my generation. His 1948 congressional campaign was the first time I ever participated in politics. We became friends for a lifetime. (I was even his caddy when he won the national celebrity golf championship in the ’50s.)

His intellect, courage, steadfastness and patriotism enriched our community and our nation. He leaves an enduring example of an exceptional man who gave his life to public service.
