Look what eight years of Clinton-Gore have done to this country. A candidate for the highest office in the nation lied to us at least three times in the first debate, and a Tribune editorial Oct. 5 says that it’s not the first time a candidate has lied during the campaign. Maybe not, but journalists and the public used to get upset about it.

Lack of character in our leadership does have consequences for the nation. First, you never know where such a candidate stands on the issues. If the polls change, his position is likely to change too.

Second, instead of honest debate with the goal of reaching a consensus about what is best for the country, the president without character does what is best for his own political career. This makes it difficult for him to negotiate with the other party or with foreign leaders.

Finally, he can’t lead because people don’t trust him. This is one reason why morale is so bad in the military today.

So let’s not brush off these lies as normal political exaggeration. Certainly Gore knew he didn’t visit Texas with FEMA. It’s a case of Gore making up any story if he thinks it will make him look good.
