That abortion has been brought up as an issue in this election is unfortunate. Neither candidate has any real power over the status of abortion in this nation. It is irrelevant that the abortion pill RU-486 passed inspection by the Food and Drug Administration–neither candidate can direct the FDA’s decisions, nor can Congress reverse the FDA’s ruling.
Neither pro-choice nor pro-life voters should worry about the appointment of new Supreme Court justices either. Even though presidents have historically made their appointments based upon political pressure, the court itself has attempted to follow the perceived will of the people in its decisions.
Twelve years of Republican presidents did not substantially decrease a woman’s constitutional right to choose. There is no reason to believe that another GOP presidency will have any great effect upon the state of abortion in the United States either.
