Carolina Panthers quarterback Steve Beuerlein has the flu and is questionable for Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints.
Beuerlein woke up Saturday feeling ill and was not able to practice, team spokesman Charlie Dayton said. He later went to a Charlotte hospital, where he was given fluids and held late into the afternoon. He was scheduled to arrive in New Orleans late Saturday night.
Beuerlein, who threw for an NFL-leading 4,436 yards last season, has thrown for 1,261 yards and seven touchdowns this season. Jeff Lewis, his backup, has not attempted a pass this season. The Denver Broncos signed kicker Scott Bentley to back up ailing Jason Elam, who is recovering from two broken bones in his lower back.
Denver coach Mike Shanahan said there is still a chance Elam will play Sunday against the Cleveland Browns. To make room for Bentley on the roster, the Broncos waived offensive lineman Melvin Tuten.
