Richard Edwin Young, 49, of La Grange, who worked for 20 years at the family construction company and who played bass guitar in rock bands throughout his life, died of mantle-cell lymphoma Wednesday, Oct. 11, in Hinsdale Hospital. “Everyone who met him felt like they were his best friend,” his daughter, Tracy Yelen, said. Mr. Young was born and raised on Chicago’s South Side and graduated from the University of Chicago Laboratory School. While in high school in the summer of 1967, his band, the Catalinas, toured Europe, his sister Patricia Johnson said. As an adult, Mr. Young played in a band, Windjamer, at social functions such as weddings. In 1972 he married his wife, Nancy, who had two young children, Tracy and David, that he helped raise. Mr. Young went to work for the family construction business, Young & Sons Construction Co., in 1978, and took over leadership of the firm in the mid-1990s. Mr. Young’s wife died in 1995. Mr. Young also is survived by his parents, Vincent and Leona Young; another sister, Barbara Young Styles; two brothers, James and Eric; and three grandchildren. A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Monday in Trinity Evangelical Covenant Church, 9230 S. Pulaski Rd., Oak Lawn. Visitors can meet with family at 5:45 p.m. and after the service at the church.
