I am writing to express dismay at our government’s decision not to explicitly support the UN Security Council resolution condemning Israel for gross human-rights violations during the current unrest in the Middle East. For some to make the statement that Palestinians are responsible for starting this latest bout of violence, one just needs to look at the manner in which Ariel Sharon visited Al Aqsa Mosque that fateful Friday–an entry into the Noble Sanctuary surrounded by scores of armed soldiers is not a mission of peace but a blatant act of provocation.
I have also been moved by photographs of young and old Palestinians facing the latest Israeli military hardware with stones and slingshots–a reminder of David versus Goliath, if ever there was one.
