R.J. “Draz” Drazkowski, age 64, Friday October 13, 2000 at Provena St. Joseph Medical Center, Joliet. Born in Winona, Minnesota and a longtime New Lenox and Morris area resident. In 1999, R.J. celebrated 50 years of covering high school sports in the Chicagoland area, beginning as a stringer at the Chicago Heights Star. Initiated both the sports sections of the Harvey Tribune and Frankfort/Mokena Star, not to mention helping found Pro Football Weekly. Former Sports Editor of the Joliet-Herald News, where he was the first four-time Copley Ring of Truth awardwinner for the best local sports story. Provided copy assistance to numerous other publications throughout the years, most recently for the Daily Southtown, Morris Herald and Herald-News. Gave numerous area sportswriters their starts in the business. Co-founded Lemont Christmas Classic basketball tournament in 1978 and served as its tournament coordinator for all 22 years. Also published books on history of both Morris and Lemont High School football. Induction into Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame this past spring served as capper to a plethora of awards. Survived by two daughters Mary Kay (Dan) Goesel of Morris, Susan (Steve) Burns of New York; three sons Michael (Shannon “Irish” Egan) Drazkowski of New York, Robert (Jacki) Drazkowski of Ottawa, and David Drazkowski of Morris; seven grandchildren Robby “My Hero” and Becky “Little Buddy” Goesel, Ryan, Kristofer and Alyssa Drazkowski, Laurie and Brian Burns also survive; preceeded by his parents, Leonard and Ester Drazkowski and Harriette and Palmer Drazkowski. Funeral services for R.J. Drazkowski will be Tuesday, October 17, 2000 at 8 p.m. at the West Chapel. Persuant to his final wishes, Cremation Rites will be accorded.
