Andrew J. Stopka, 73, of Geneva and formerly of West Chicago, died Friday, Oct. 13, in his home. Born in Chicago, Mr. Stopka served in the Army during the Korean War as a staff sergeant from 1950 to 1952 in the 43rd Division, 743rd Ordnance. He retired in 1992 from the DuKane Corp. of St. Charles, where he worked as a tool and die engineer, and later a foreman, for almost 40 years. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, where he served twice as commander of Batavia VFW Post 1197 from 1984 to 1985 and 1994 to 1995. He went on to become a District 19 commander. One of his greatest accomplishments was building his home on Smith Road in West Chicago. He was a former member of St. John Neumann Church in St. Charles, where he was an usher. Survivors include his wife, Florence; a son, Andrew R.; three daughters, Diane, Jacqueline and Cynthia Gilpin; two brothers, Albert and William; a sister, Elaine Birlson; and five grandchildren. Services have been held.
