The arrogance is almost unbelievable.

To think the Middle East conflict is controllable by any nation or coalition of nations borders on complete ignorance.

This is a conflict dating back to biblical times.

Bloodshed is the norm.

Peace is a stranger to this region.

Israel is holding onto a claim dating back to the Old Testament, while the Palestinians are fighting for a foothold in the region.

Both nations feel they have been wronged.

Both nations are probably correct in that assumption.

Westerners just don’t seem to understand that a ceremonial handshake on the White House lawn or a weekend getaway at Camp David won’t even make a dent in this centuries-old struggle.

When will we all come to the realization that even if Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat sign some sort of lasting peace agreement, each leader will have ceded too much for the people of their respective countries to accept? Both sides are guilty.

Both sides are enacting violence and paying a high death toll among their people.

It is time to realize that the United States is not the international moderator.

It is time to stop taking sides in the Middle East.

It is time for Americans to simply step back and pray that both sides will someday work this out for themselves.
