The Tribune needs to examine its coverage of college athletics. College football writer Andrew Bagnato was dispatched to Manhattan, Kan., for a midseason game between two undefeated, Top 10 teams, Oklahoma and Kansas State, and all he provided readers was a one-column piece deriding Kansas State for its usual practice of playing an extremely soft non-conference schedule (Tribune, Oct. 15). There was no game detail, and the most interesting item was a smirking quote from former OU coach Barry Switzer, who coincidentally called K-State coach Bill Snyder the “coach of the century” a few years ago for his building the K-State program nearly from scratch.
Meanwhile, the Wisconsin Badgers have employed similar scheduling techniques under coach Barry Alvarez, a former University of Iowa assistant like coach Snyder, yet the practice is ignored as Mr. Bagnato heaped little but praise on the Badgers during their success before this season. It would seem that recent Wisconsin opponents Cincinnati, Murray State and various Mid-American Conference universities would be welcome additions to Kansas State’s schedule, and perhaps the Badgers should be subject to the same criticism Kansas State receives.
