During the presidency of Ronald Reagan, journalists noticed that he had a propensity for wearing brown suits. Thus the term “Reagan brown” was coined to describe a particular shade of men’s clothing.
Following that presidential fashion trend was a little-known statistic issued by a men’s clothing manufacturer: that more brown suits were sold in the Midwest than anywhere else in the country. Nearly 20 years later, Reagan’s love letters have been published in a book, suits have given way to casual separates and the color brown has been embraced by fashion designers once again.
But this isn’t your Reagan brown of the ’80s. It’s all shades and tones of brown worn together as separates to create a look. Think dark chocolate, butterscotch, pale mocha. Or a solid brown leather jacket, a brown argyle sweater, a cocoa turtleneck, tan suede pants or rust messenger bag.
Who knows? Perhaps brown again may become the fashion color choice of men in the Midwest.
