The article “Scientists rouse bacterium from 250-million-year slumber” (Page 1, Oct. 19) really fascinated me.
But there was one part of the story that really scared me, and that was the location where the salt crystal containing the bacterium was found.
The article said that the crystal was found 1,850 feet down in the Earth, 30 miles east of Carlsbad, New Mexico, in what is to be a nuclear waste dump.
Time has proven to us that there really isn’t a truly safe way to dispose of nuclear waste. This bacterium, which is a miracle of Mother Nature, was found while the waste dump was being dug.
What other hidden miracles will face potential destruction before we find them because of their close proximity to a nuclear waste dump?
Someone should seriously rethink the rationality of burying nuclear waste in the ground.
