Ervin J. Konen Sr., 77, of Batavia, died Wednesday, Oct. 25, at Vencor Hospital in Sycamore, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. Born in Batavia, Mr. Konen was a 1941 graduate of Batavia High School and a veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific as an aerial gunner in the Army Air Forces. His work primarily consisted of owning and operating several service stations in the area. His first station was Konen’s Standard Station in Aurora, which he ran in partnership with his brother, Richard. Later he opened Erv’s DX and Sunoco in Geneva. He later worked as a supervisor for Campana Corp. in Geneva. Mr. Konen loved all sports and was a loyal fan of the Batavia High School basketball team. He was honored in 1997 as the Batavia High basketball fan of the year. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Edna; three sons, Ervin, Larry and Ronald; six daughters, Georgia Wallers, Cathy Kelley, Debra Beuhler, Cindy Mair, Jeannette Siegler and Marla James; a brother, Richard; four sisters, Maxine Streff, Joan Grant, Pat Renaud, and Bernice; 16 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Services have been held.
