Actress Jessica Alba says she’s a lot like Max, her character on the hit sci-fi/action series “Dark Angel” — except that the 19-year-old, pouty-lipped actress wasn’t engineered by the U.S. government.
Or so we think.
“I don’t care about what anyone says is cool,” Alba recently told KidNews. “I don’t care about wearing the most fashionable, up-to-date thing. I usually walk around in no makeup with my hair in a ponytail, because I just don’t care.”
And Max? “She doesn’t care how sexy she is,” Alba said. “She doesn’t care if she’s flirting the right way. Her priority is all about relating to people’s hearts. It’s not about money or who’s cooler. I could relate to all of that.”
And for good reason. “Dark Angel” co-creators James (“Titanic”) Cameron and Charles Eglee wrote the show’s pilot after Alba signed on to the series and incorporated elements of her personality into Max.
The character, for those unfamiliar with the show, is a genetically revved-up young woman living in post-apocalyptic Seattle. She gets by as a thief and messenger while trying to hide from the government that built her. Sparks fly between Max and cyberjournalist Logan (Michael Weatherly) when they team up to expose corrupt people.
Alba and company are doing something right. “Dark Angel” has been huge since its debut a few weeks ago, and Alba is psyched.
” ‘Dark Angel’ can be limitless,” she said. “When the pilot was done and I saw the final cut, I thought, ‘Oh my goodness, this is a BIG deal.’ When I read scripts now, I’m thinking, ‘I’m really doing this. This is me every time it says Max.’ I can’t believe it!”
Alba-bit soup
Deja-view: You may have seen Alba in “Never Been Kissed,” “Idle Hands” and TV’s “Flipper”
Beautiful blend: Her exotic looks are from her Mexican-French-Spanish-Danish-American background.
Fighting form: How’d she train for her role as Max? “Oreos, donuts,” Alba joked. “I did like a year of working out with [a trainer]. I did gymnastics. I did motorcycle training and a bit of kung fu.”
