Some area pumpkin growers say the unexpected has happened–they’re out of jack-o’-lanterns.

“We usually never run out of pumpkins,” said Gail Hermanson, of the Hermanson Pumpkin Patch in Edgerton. “We had people here on Sunday from Madison that said they had already driven 30 or 40 miles and couldn’t find a pumpkin anywhere.”

Record spring rainfall resulted in fungi that ate away at the pumpkin crop, and a hard frost during the weekend of Oct. 7-8 followed by warm temperatures did not help.
