A Tampa Bay assistant coach reported missing by the Buccaneers since last weekend was fired Thursday after returning home from Atlanta and meeting with coach Tony Dungy.

Wendell Avery, a former college teammate of Dungy’s who was in his second season as an offensive assistant, was let go so he can resolve unspecified personal matters.

– Raiders receiver Andre Rison was sentenced in Kansas City, Mo., to two years of probation for writing bad checks.

– Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Cris Carter was fined $5,000 for kicking Green Bay’s Antuan Edwards during Monday night’s game against the Green Bay Packers. . . . Tampa Bay’s Steve White was fined $7,500 for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Falcons quarterback Chris Chandler.

– Former New England Patriots running back Dave Meggett has sued two Patriots doctors and a team trainer for negligence in the treatment of a foot injury he says ended his career.
