After seeing pictures of the Florida ballot and comparing it with my experience with the Illinois ballot, it is easy to see the possibility of confusion. There was considerable confusion trying to use the Illinois ballot. The moving parts of the turning pages were able to move vertically to the extent that it was necessary to examine each name closely to determine where to punch. The names were far too close together. Obviously the spacing of the names was determined by the desire to limit the length of the ballot. With the number of names involved, the ballot should have been at least 50 percent longer, regardless of the cost of redesigning the tabulating equipment.
