Veteran Central Illinois state Sen. John Maitland (R-Bloomington) was listed in stable condition Monday in Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago after suffering a stroke over the weekend, hospital officials said.
The 64-year-old lawmaker, who serves as the state Senate’s assistant majority leader, was admitted to the hospital Sunday morning. He was undergoing tests Monday and responding to treatment, a hospital spokeswoman said.
A grain farmer born in Downstate Normal, Maitland has been in the state Senate for 21 years. It was unclear why he was in Chicago.
