Regina’s Ashley Robinson found exactly what she wanted under her Christmas tree.
“She got a CD burner and a cell phone,” said her mother, Mary. “It was a good Christmas.”
And her daughter picked up another gift at the 18th annual Dundee-Crown Christmas tournament: a date with No. 1 Fenwick in Wednesday’s quarterfinals.
Regina got that matchup because Robinson and Jill Krause each came up with 15 points in a 52-42 victory over Buffalo Grove in Tuesday’s opening round.
“I know that my leadership makes the rest of the team play better,” said Robinson, a 5-foot-6-inch sophomore who scored 12 of her points in the second half to help the Panthers (8-4) pull away from a 23-23 halftime tie. “I did want to play Fenwick, but the task at hand was to play Buffalo Grove.”
Spoken just like a coach’s daughter–which Robinson is. Her mother is an assistant for Regina coach Bob Goldberg and an assistant athletic director at the school.
“We played one half of basketball–the second half,” Goldberg said. “And we got a lot of energy out of Ashley Robinson.”
Robinson hit a three-pointer to give Regina a 33-25 lead with 3 minutes 40 seconds left in the third quarter. A minute later, one of her game-high six steals and subsequent score put the Panthers up by 10. And she hit another three-pointer at the start of the fourth quarter to keep the momentum for her team.
