Steve Chapman’s Dec. 21 column, “Despite what you hear, the kids are all right,” asserts that kids today are becoming more responsible for their own well-being, with teen crime, drug use and pregnancy rates all dropping. Although I think it is terrible that things such as teen violence, drug abuse and teen pregnancy even exist, I am not surprised at all that the numbers are going down.

I am currently a high-school student. When I first started high school three years ago, I was surprised that the high schoolers were not as bad as I had imagined. I had always envisioned teenagers as rebellious, with foul mouths and somewhat violent natures. What I found was not that at all. Besides my own home, there is nowhere that I feel more safe and comfortable than at school.

My friends are all extremely responsible and trustworthy, as are most of the people I meet. Although there will always be those teens who never think before acting, as a whole, those people increasingly are becoming a minority.
