As tired as we are of the snow and cold, most of us can escape it in our warm homes, offices and cars. But there are other innocent victims of the weather who aren’t so lucky.

They are the many stray cats (and occasional dogs) who live in the streets, alleyways and vacant lots of our city and suburbs, and who suffer terribly in the cold. (It’s a fallacy that cats can “take care of themselves” and thus are suited to life on the streets).

Animal shelters take in as many of these unfortunate creatures as they can, but most are filled to overflowing this time of year.

The problem of homeless cats and dogs could be virtually eliminated if all pet owners had their animals spayed or neutered.
