In Mike Conklin’s Jan. 1 Tempo scorecard on how many predictions in the movie “2001: A Space Odyssey” came true, he states about Pan-Am spacecraft shuttles: “We’ve got the shuttles, but Pan-Am is no longer with us.”
If so, then those of us across the border in Indiana must be living in a time warp.
The last time I passed the Gary Airport driving from Long Beach into Chicago, I saw a Pan-Am jet parked on a runway.
No obelisks in sight, however.
As someone from that not-quite-moribund airline surely will tell you, Pan-Am still shuttles passengers between Chicago, St. Louis, Boston, Philadelphia and New York, although not to the moon and not to the accompaniment of “The Blue Danube Waltz.”
