I agree with your Dec. 26 editorial “Shaq: An educated center,” which congratulated Shaquille O’Neal for getting his undergraduate degree, but a degree in general studies can hardly be expected to be more helpful in getting a real job than his basketball experience.
In the early ’60s, student athletes usually majored in business, which was not only less demanding than other fields but provided a reliable backup upon graduation if the sports career did not work out.
While Shaq may never have to work in an office, a degree in business would have been even more helpful to him than someone who did not turn pro just to help him manage his winnings.
