A residential subdivision plan on the west end of New Lenox needs larger lot sizes, trustees say.

Lakewood Homes, which wants to build 83 houses single-family homes on 36 acres at Cherry Hill Road and Washington Street, is seeking to rezone the area from commercial to residential and a designation as a planned unit development to allow some smaller-than-average lot sizes.

Richard Young, director of planning and zoning for Lakewood Homes, said the company wants some smaller lots so a wooded, 4.8-acre site can be donated for parkland.

The park will be an asset for the subdivision and the park district, Young said.

Residents of a neighboring Cherry Hill Manor subdivision want to see the area developed residentially but they are opposed to the Lakewood plan because of small lots, resident Judith DeVriendt said.

The large number of additional houses may add to the neighborhood’s drainage problems, DeVriendt said.

Most trustees agreed the subdivision should be designed with lot sizes comparable to others in the neighborhood.

Trustee Annette Bowden objected to the location of the wooded park site.

Trustee James Skiniotes said he opposes the rezoning. New Lenox needs more commercial development, Skiniotes said.
