In response to Janice C. Strom’s Jan. 1 letter, “Cheap labor,” perhaps it should be pointed out that there is quite a difference between one’s livelihood and one’s civic duty. Without a doubt, any firefighter, police officer or other civil servant receives the same amount of $17.20 for a day’s work as a juror.

Were I to face a jury, whether innocent or guilty, I would hope to have my peers serve because of their sense of civic duty, and not because the job pays well.
