People’s Gas hides behind the notion that supply-and-demand dictates price hikes, as if corporate decision-making had nothing to do with it. The fact is that low supply or high demand are only favorable conditions in which corporations supplying a necessary resource like natural gas can charge what the market will bear. Primary suppliers of natural gas are not forced to charge more when the supply is low; they take advantage of the low supply to gouge the public.

In the short term, labor unions, community groups and churches should help to rally the people of Chicago and suburbs to demand a rollback of natural gas prices. Merely spreading highway robbery out over 12 months does not make it anything other than highway robbery.
