NATO warned countries and aid workers in the Balkans months ago about the possible dangers of depleted uranium ammunition, which has recently sparked concern as a possible cause of serious illnesses in soldiers.

Germany’s Defense Ministry confirmed Sunday that it received a warning in July 1999 of the risks from the ordnance, used by the U.S. in air campaigns across Yugoslavia for its armor-piercing qualities. Concerns over depleted uranium resurfaced in December after Italy announced an inquiry into 30 sick soldiers. Twelve have cancer and five have died of leukemia.
