Bush’s appointments are not a fine start; they are a disaster (“A first-rate team for Bush,” Editorial, Jan. 4).

He has nominated a labor secretary who has opposed the minimum wage and an interior secretary who wants to pillage the pristine environments she is meant to protect. His energy secretary is a pawn of Big Oil, and the attorney-general designate is a reactionary who opposed desegregation and feels compelled to defend Confederate war heroes.

I’m very relieved, though, because it will be a multicultural cabinet mismanaging the country.

I was afraid it would be a bunch of white people.
