Winter hadn’t even officially arrived when several inches of snow fell throughout most of Illinois, Indiana and Michigan. Despite the snow and freezing temperatures, the men and women of the United States Postal Service in the Great Lakes area delivered almost 424 million cards and letters and more than 4 million parcel-post, Priority and Express Mail packages to households and businesses in time for Christmas.

Our 80,000 employees made a special effort to do their jobs, despite the severe weather, so all your holiday shipments would arrive on time. Some of them made superhuman efforts.

The postmaster of Grovertown, Ind., slept at the post office so his customers would get their mail the next day.

The postmaster of Fremont, Mich., delivered mail by dog sled.

Thousands of clerks, mail handlers and letter carriers worked on Christmas Eve or on Christmas Day to deliver hundreds of last-minute Express and Priority Mail shipments.

To the employees of the U.S. Postal Service in the Great Lakes area, thank you for making this a successful holiday mailing season.

And to our customers, thank you for relying on us to deliver your holiday wishes and presents.
