Arthur E. Sherden, 72, of Barrington, a retired letter carrier who delivered mail on the north side of Arlington Heights in the 1950s and 1960s, died Sunday, Jan. 7, in Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington. Mr. Sherden grew up on Chicago’s Northwest Side and graduated from Schurz High School there. Following graduation, Mr. Sherden started working as a letter carrier in Chicago before he was transferred to the Arlington Heights post office in the late 1940s. In the 1970s, he served as assistant postmaster for the Lake Zurich post office before he retired in the 1970s. During his retirement, Mr. Sherden worked for Rescue Eight as a driver of a van for wheelchair users. “One of his patrons on his mail delivery route decided they had a job for him,” recalled his wife of 52 years, Doris. “They needed a people person. When he took these senior citizens in the van, he always tried talking to them.” He retired from that job in 1992. Other survivors include a daughter, Judy Okon; a son, Kenneth; and five grandchildren. A service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Meadows Funeral Home, 3615 Kirchoff Rd., Rolling Meadows.
