The recent news about the serious tire problems being encountered by motorists has prompted this letter. The Tire Retread Information Bureau has been promoting the importance of proper tire inflation for many years. Tires that are properly maintained (air pressure checked regularly, vehicles not driven overloaded, etc.) are safer and will last longer.
Properly maintained tires will also lead to better fuel mileage because underinflated tires create a “drag,” which requires the vehicle to work harder, leading to more fuel used.
Tires that are driven underinflated have a greater probability of failing, which can lead to catastrophic problems. Underinflation is also the prime reason why we see so much tire debris on our highways.
