Regarding Mike Conklin’s Jan. 7 commentary on John Calipari: Coach Cal has profited from his success as a coach, but who can blame him? Most anyone would be foolish not to profit from success.
If Conklin could see the impact Coach Cal has had on our city and the University of Memphis, he would be amazed. He works harder than any coach we’ve ever had, and he deserves to prosper for being one of the best in his field. He gives back to the community and even donates part of his salary to the university that pays him.
To be honest, I was surprised he signed with the Tigers. He could have made a lot more money elsewhere. Granted, it’s the largest contract our school has offered, but it pales in comparison to what he could make shopping himself in the open market.
I think Coach Cal is one of the best things about our city now. He really wants to see the city, our college and his players do well. If he prospers, then I’m happy because that means he is doing a good job. As an alum of Memphis, I feel Cal is really a good person as well as a heck of a coach.
