I was outraged to read “Lawyers to use sickness as Bauer’s defense, But medical testimony faces fight” (Metro, Jan. 5) regarding the defense Dean Bauer’s attorney planned to use in the license-for-bribes charges being presented in his upcoming trial.

Your article explained that “battles with cancer and a thyroid problem left him anxious, forgetful and depressed, affecting his decision-making abilities…”

I, too, am battling cancer. And although I plead guilty to periods of anxiety and depression, I have not once considered extorting money from friends or co-workers, or any other felony.

This defense is an insult to every cancer patient and survivor. If it were a valid defense, we would all be out robbing banks, running guns and kidnapping little children for ransom.

Although we are in the battle of our lives, for our lives, we still know the difference between right and wrong.
