An 85-year-old man who had been missing since last month and whose body was found Friday blocks from the West Side VA Hospital where he was last seen, died of a heart attack, the Cook County medical examiner’s office said Sunday.

Harry Powell, of the 2600 block of South Indiana Avenue, had been missing since Dec. 17, when he took a bus to the hospital at 822 S. Damen Ave. to be treated for leg pain, police spokesman Matthew Jackson said. He was discharged at 3:45 p.m. that day.

On Friday police were called to a vacant lot at 2000 W. Ogden Ave. after someone saw a body lying near a tree, police Sgt. Robert Gerwig said.

An autopsy performed Sunday concluded that the death was natural.

“Why he wasn’t discovered sooner, I don’t know,” Gerwig said.
