I, for one, do grieve for the demise of Montgomery Ward.
Seventy years ago, as a young girl living on a farm without electricity, water and many of the necessities we take for granted today, I took great pleasure in looking through Wards’ catalogs at great length, then finally persuading my mother to order clothes for me. I couldn’t wait for that package to come!
Thirty three years later, I found myself working for Wards’. I had moved to Skokie, and employees at the Old Orchard store welcomed me into their office.
I’ve been retired for some years now, but the friends I’ve made are wonderful people I treasure.
We meet at least once a year for lunch and gossip.
My association with Wards’ has always been pleasurable. I’m sorry to see such a charitable retail giant disappear from the scene.
