Dennis Byrne’s Jan. 15 column was factually inaccurate and just plain stupid. First off, he states that, “If the present trend continues, the U.S. population will double by the middle of this century and will reach 1.2 billion people–the population of China–within the lives of our grandchildren . . . “

The latest projections from the United Nations, which take into account immigration, predict a 2050 population of 349 million for the United States. This represents less than a 25 percent increase, far lower than the 50 percent increase for the world as a whole.

Responsible population experts will tell you that there is absolutely no way our population can double in the next 50 years without total disaster overseas.

But responsibility is apparently not Mr. Byrne’s aim–fear-mongering is.

Second, Byrne sets up this immigration hoo-ha by claiming that Linda Chavez was “Borked” by the Democrats.

Is there no end to conservative willingness to attack?

Linda Chavez “Borked” herself, and it couldn’t have happened to a nicer person.

She “Borked” herself not when she did a nice but illegal thing for an illegal immigrant, but when she attacked Zoe Baird years ago, not for not paying Social Security but merely for housing an illegal immigrant.

The Democrats could have remained entirely mum on this, and George Bush would still have pushed Chavez out.

I do not object to conservative polemic, and I do think it has a place in your newspaper. What I object to is crudeness, malice, hypocrisy, inaccuracy and bad faith.

Get rid of Byrne and Chavez and get an intelligent conservative.
