As an African-American woman, I was disappointed in Clarence Page’s column “Could this latest episode be the end of the Rainbow?” (Commentary, Jan. 21), regarding Rev. Jesse Jackson’s recent revelations.
Although I will be the first to admit my disappointment with Rev. Jackson, his actions do not wipe out his many achievements.
More important, the struggle for human and civil rights has not been won and must continue.
As a very comfortable middle-class citizen, I understand that until everyone has the same access and opportunities I have had, the United States of America has not lived up to its promise.
To those who believe that Rev. Jackson and others are out of step with the times, I invite you to review any recently gathered statistics on education, wealth or health.
You will see that African-Americans are still struggling despite the monumental gains of the Clinton era.
I hold no illusions that our new president’s “affirmative access” initiatives will do anything more than erode the gains that so many, including Rev. Jackson, have fought and sometimes died to achieve.
