I listened today to a rebroadcast from a Republican pre-inauguration “Eulogy dinner for Bill Clinton.” What could have been a good-natured and deserved roasting of the departing president turned out to be anything but. As successive attendees raised their glasses to make individual toasts, their remarks became more and more tasteless and mean-spirited, exposing the intense pathological hatred and contempt they have for the man.
I hope that moderate Republicans were as disgusted as I was by the hateful tone and social attitudes underlying their remarks.
Converting such pathology into compassion will be a daunting task.
