I have never read a more preposterous and unfounded piece than Georgie Anne Geyer’s “Saddam is aiming for a regional war” (Commentary, Jan. 19).
Her conviction that Saddam is planning to begin a war is based on absolutely no evidence whatsoever.
The fact that Saddam has given aid to the Palestinians does not support her thesis.
Many other Arab countries financially support the Palestinian cause.
Yet they are not accused of provoking a war.
Is the United States guilty of the same by financially aiding Israel’s military?
Furthermore, Geyer makes no attempt to prove that Saddam has attained chemical weapons.
Tanks being paraded through the streets not only fail to qualify as weapons of mass destruction.
But they also fail to violate any sanctions.
The “rumor” that Iraq is building an “axis” with Russia and Venezuela is equally undocumented.
More importantly, the charges levied by Geyer are potentially dangerous.
The words seek to panic the American reader.
And they provide fuel and justification for future hostilities against Iraq.
Such haphazard and reckless journalism cannot be tolerated.
